Caramels weren’t really my thing. But that was before I tried vegan and gluten-free Caramels by In the Oven.
Erica Van Driel and Sami Rix, the bakers-turned-confectioners at Vancouver’s In the Oven, sent us samples of their lime and smoked salt caramels. In March, they launched their line of caramels in five flavours.
The lime flavour is fresh and fruity, but it doesn’t overwhelm the caramel. The opposite is almost true for the smoked salt caramels, which are more salty than smoky. Both varieties are sweet, chewy goodness, but the lime is my favourite of the two.
There’s also coconut, dark chocolate coffee, and maple pecan flavours available. The caramels are GMO-free, contain no artificial flavours or preservatives, and are made in small batches.
You can buy 90-gram bags of Caramels by In the Oven online for $7 each via Foodie Pages. This month, In the Oven will be selling the caramels at the Hawkers Market on May 11, Great Canadian Craft’s Spring Fling on May 11 and 12, and the Eat Vancouver Food + Cooking Festival from May 24 to 26. On June 1 and 2, they’ll be at the Vancouver Mini Maker Faire.
